Ronald Reagan Stamps Issued
Collectors Give Stamp of Approval
by Lucas Everidge
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - People seeking to mail letters can no longer avoid
these portraits of marked with shining blue eyes and an optimistic smile.
Ronald Reagan's commemorative postage stamp began circulating on February
9, 2005, three days after the President's ninety-fourth birthday. Reagan
was born February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois (see Ronald
Reagan collectibles). The 37-cent stamp honoring the nation's 40th
president had been ceremoniously unveiled Nov. 9, 2004 at Reagan's library
in Simi Valley. Reagan died June 5, 2004 at his home in Bel Air, Calif.
The Postal Service traditionally doesn't honor prominent Americans
with a stamp until at least 10 years after their deaths. U.S. presidents
are the exception, who may be honored with a stamp after the first birth
anniversary following their death. On an interesting note, Reagan hand
wrote and mailed more than 10,000 letters in his lifetime.
A look at eBay listing shows that collectors are interested in the
new commemorative stamp. One popular auction on eBay are sheets of the
stamps, with the cancellation mark showing February 9. Sellers also are
auctioning Reagan postcards with the stamps affixed postmarked from Tampico,
Illinois. There are other interesting variations of First Day Issues.
Small countries also sell Ronald Reagan stamps. There are almost always
auctions running for stamps printed in Grenada, Antigua, Belize and others.
